Founded in 2021 by Helen Rogers, Koop Projects is a contemporary African art project founded in Brighton, UK.
Through our work we look for innovative ways to support and promote African art and artists on the continent. A neighbourhood gallery with an international outlook, we explore the various ways a gallery can exist to serve both local, national and international communities in physical spaces and online platforms as well as in experimental formats. .
The first iteration of Koop Projects in Brighton, UK created exhibitions, collaborations and conversations with artists based in Africa and their local counterparts in and around Sussex. It introduced new art, new artists and new ways of working to a dynamic art community in a coastal city with a strong local art network. We supported our local art community through the gift of space - by identifying talented artists and curators for whom access to commercial space is scarce and offering them a place to realise their own projects and tell their stories.
Our second space will open in Victoria Falls in June 2026. Loosely based around ideas of Human Nature and Natural Histories the work and artists exhibited will create a visual dialogue within one of the world’s most visited natural wonders - examining the ways that human beings and their environment work with and in conflict with each other.
We work with artists early in their careers, as well as those whose careers we feel have not yet received the recognition they deserve, supporting them by exposing them to new audiences. Often these artists have not been seen in the UK or outside their home countries. In many cases artists who exhibit with us have gone on to achieve significant institutional acclaim and to be represented by influential galleries - winning prestigious awards and receiving coveted residencies all around the globe.
