London Art Fair - Encounters Platform: Material Matters 2

At Koop Projects, we propose new conversations between artists based in Africa and their counterparts in and around Brighton, Sussex.

We are very proud to bring one of these dialogues to the London Art Fair for the first time where we will present new work by five artists from South Africa, Zimbabwe and Brighton.

Senzeni Marasela lives and works in Soweto, South Africa. A cross-disciplinary artist who explores photography, video, prints, and mixed-medium installations involving textiles and embroidery, her work deals with history, memory, and personal narrative, emphasising historical gaps and overlooked figures. We are showing five new works from Marasela's most recent series: Last Known Location.

Georgina Maxim is known for her work as both an artist and curator and for co-founding Village Unhu, an artist space in Harare Zimbabwe, in 2012. Maxim uses methods of weaving, sewing and winding to de-structure, cut and re-compose recycled clothing.  We are excited to present one of these new artworks at London Art Fair.

Arabel Lebrusan is involved with transforming materials into physical metaphors, seeking to amplify the voices of the people and the land falling through what she sees as systemic cracks. Lebrusan's sculpture and site-specific interventions function as social commentary. We will present three metal works for the first time in London.

Through his artwork Peter Mammes aims to surpass language barriers posed by the written and spoken word and develop a new, comprehensive way to visually relay complex ideas. In this new body of work, Mammes has developed a new process for creating his complex drawings from polyurethane rubber and we are excited to show these for the first time in London,

Calling upon his life as a fashion designer, specialising in bridal wear, Tony Mentel uses techniques such as hand and machine embroidery, applique and hand beading to create scenes and moments from queer life and the Sussex countryside. In recent years he has been creating a body of work centred on the iconic Duke's Mound in Brighton. We will show two exquisite new tapestries at the fair.
